Lesson Twenty-four

Huang Jiguang

1.The Battle of Triangle Hill started in October 1952.

2.This is the fiercest positional warfare on the Korean battlefield.

3.The battalion where Huang Jiguang was in had been fighting for four days and four nights; on the fifth night, he received an order from the superior to conquer the enemy’s 597.9 highland before dawn.

4.The attack began and the artillery was roaring.The soldiers have occupied one mountain after another and were about to reach the main peak of 597.9 highland.

5.All of a sudden, the enemy fired fiercely at a fire point.

6.The soldiers repeatedly attacked and were pressed back by guns more dense than the rain.

7.There was a rising star in the East.The instructor looked at his watch.It’s past four o’clock.

8.If this firepower point could not be destroyed soon, the main peak of 597.9 highland would not be conquered before dawn, and all the hills that have been captured would be lost.

9.Huang Jiguang looked at the enemy’s firepower angrily.He turned around and said firmly to the instructor, “Instructor, please give me this task!”

10.The instructor clenched Huang Jiguang’s hand and said, “OK, I believe you can accomplish this glorious and arduous task.”

11.Huang Jiguang, together with two soldiers, took grenades, and called out, “Let the people of the motherland listen to the news of our victory”.They climbed to the enemy’s firepower point.

12.The enemy found them.

13.Countless flares went up into the sky, and night became day.

14.Shells exploded around them.

15.They were crawling along in smoke and fire.

16.One soldier died and the other was wounded.

17.The task of destroying the firepower point fell on Huang Jiguang alone.

18.The enemy in the firepower point pointed the machine gun at Huang Jiguang, and the bullets shot like hail.

19.Huang Jiguang was injured on his shoulder and leg.  

20.With all his strength, he climbed forward more tenaciously, and there were still 20 meters, 10 meters… It was closer and closer.

21.Ah! Huang Jiguang suddenly stood up!

22.He stood up in the midst of a storm of bullets!            

23.He raised his right arm and the grenade flashed in the light of the searchlight.

24.Boom! The enemy’s firepower point collapsed, and Huang Jiguang fainted.

25.The soldiers rushed up, but only half way, the enemy’s machine guns screamed again, and the soldiers were forced back to the hillside.

26.It’s getting light, and the appointed time was coming.

27.The instructor was in a hurry when Huang Jiguang stood up again!

28.With his arms outstretched, he pounced on the blazing fire and blocked the muzzle of the enemy’s gun with his chest.

29.“Go! Revenge for Huang Jiguang!” The cry shocked the world.

30.The soldiers, like waves of the sea, rose and occupied the 597.9 highland and destroyed all the enemies in the position.
