Lesson Twenty

Wonderful And Terrible

1. When I was seven or eight years old, I wrote my first poem.

2. As soon as my mother read the poem, her eyes were bright and she cried excitedly, “Buddy, is it really written by you?”

3. What a beautiful poem!

4. Wonderful!”

5. She put her arms around me, and the praise rained on me.

6. Being shy and smug, I nodded and told her that this poem was really written by me.

7. She hugged me again for joy.

8. “Mom, when will Dad come back in the afternoon?”

9. I asked blushing.

10. I can’t wait to show my father my poems at once.

11. “He will come back at seven o’clock in the evening.”

12. Mother touched my head and said with a smile.

13. All afternoon I waited for my father to come back with a sense of pride.

14. I carefully rewrote the poem as soon as possible with the most beautiful Chinese characters, and drew a circle of lace around it with a colored pen.

15. It was about seven o’clock, I quietly walked into the dining room and confidently put it in my father’s position at the dining table.

16. It was seven o’clock.

17. Quarter past seven.

18. Seven thirty.

19. Father hasn’t come back yet.

20. I can’t wait.

21. I admire my father, who is an important figure in a film company and has written many plays.

22. He will certainly appreciate my wonderful poem than my mother.

23. Towards eight o’clock, my father finally pushed through the door.

24. He entered the dining room, and his eyes were attracted by the poem on the dining table.

25. I’m extremely nervous.

26. “What is this?”

27. He picked up my poem.

28. “Dear, a wonderful thing happened.

29. Buddy wrote a poem, which is wonderful...” Mother came forward and said.

30. “Sorry, I will judge for myself.”

31. Father began to read poetry.

32. I buried my head low.

33. There are only ten lines in the poem, but I think he read it for several hours.

34. “I think this poem is terrible.”

35. Father threw the poem back to its original place.

36. My eyes are wet and my head is too heavy to lift.

37. “Dear, I really don’t know what you mean!”

38. My mother cried, “This is not in your company.

39. Buddy is still a child. This is his first poem. He needs encouragement.”

40. “I don’t understand,” my father didn’t give in, “isn’t there enough bad poems in the world?".

41. I can’t take it anymore.

42. I rushed out of the dining room, ran into my room, threw myself on the bed and burst into tears.

43. In the dining room, parents are still arguing about the poem.

44. A few years later, when I picked up that poem again, I had to admit that my father was right. It was indeed a rather bad poem.

45. However, my mother encouraged me as always, so I have been writing.

46. Once I plucked up the courage to show my father a new short story.

47. “It’s not well written, but it’s not hopeless.”

48. According to my father’s comment on writing, I learned to revise it before I was twelve years old.

49. Now I have produced many works and published novels, plays and screenplays.

50. I realize more and more how lucky I was at the beginning.

51. I have a kind mother who often says to me, “Buddy, did you write this?

52. Wonderful!”

53. I also have a strict father, who always frowned and said, “This is terrible.”

54. A writer, it should be said that everyone in life needs the power from his mother, and this power of love is the source of inspiration and creation.

55. But this alone is not comprehensive, and it may lead people astray.

56. Therefore, it needs the power of warning to balance, and someone needs to remind you from time to time, “Be careful, pay attention, summarize and improve.”

57. Over the years, these two kinds of voices I heard in my youth are intertwined in my ears, “wonderful” and “terrible”; “Wonderful”, “terrible”... They are like two winds blowing at me constantly.

58. I hold the boat in my life carefully so that it won’t be blown down by any wind.

59. I know from the bottom of my heart that no matter “wonderful” or “terrible”, these two extreme assertions have a common starting point, that is, love.

60. Inspired by love, I drove forward hard.
