Lesson Seventeen

The Unforgettable Songkran Festival

1.When the red phoenix flower is blooming, the annual Songkran Festival of the Dai people has arrived again.

2. During the Songkran Festival in 1961, the Dai people were particularly happy because the beloved Premier Zhou Enlai celebrated this special date together with them.

3. That morning, people banged the elephant-foot drums and gathered from all directions.

4. In order to welcome Premier Zhou, people scattered the petals of the phoenix flowers on the ground, so it looked as if it were covered with a bright red carpet.

5. A group of dragon boats sailed across the river while a series of fireworks rose into the sky.

6. People cheered: “Premier Zhou is here!"

7. Premier Zhou was wearing a white coat, brown trousers and a bright pink turban on his head. He joined the crowd with a smile on his face.

8. He took an elephant-foot drum, beat it with joy, stepped on the “carpet” of phoenix flowers and danced with the Dai people.

9. The water splashing started.

10. Premier Zhou held a silver bowl full of clear water in one hand and dipped a cypress branch into the water to splash the blessing water on people with the other hand. 

11. The Dai people were cheering and sprinkling water on Premier Zhou to wish him health and longevity.

12. Clear water was splashing and sprinkling everywhere!

13. Premier Zhou and the Dai people laughed and danced, so happy they were!

3.那天早晨，人们敲起象脚鼓，从四面八方赶来了。

4.为了欢迎周总理，人们在地上撒满了凤凰花的花瓣，好像铺上了鲜红的地毯。

5.一条条龙船驶过江面，一串串花炮升上天空。

6.人们欢呼着：“周总理来了！”

7.周总理身穿襟白褂，咖啡色长裤，头上包着一条水红色头巾，笑容满面地来到人群中。

8.他接过一只象脚鼓，敲着欢乐的鼓点，踩着凤凰花铺成的“地毯”，同傣族人民一起跳舞。

9.开始泼水了。

10.周总理一手端着盛满清水的银碗，一手拿着柏树枝蘸了水，向人们泼洒，为人们祝福。

11.傣族人民一边欢呼，一边向周总理泼水，祝福他健康长寿。

12.清清的水，泼呀，洒呀！

13.周总理和傣族人民笑哇，跳哇，是那么开心！
