Lesson Thirteen

The Hanhao Bird (Cold Whining Bird)

1. There was a stone cliff at the foot of the mountain; inside the cliff, there was a crevice. The hanhao bird had taken it as its nest. 

2. There was a river in front of the cliff; by the river, there was a big poplar tree. The magpie perched on the tree. 

3.The hanhao bird and the magpie lived face to face and became neighbors. 

4. In autumn, the leaves fell after a few gusts of wind. Winter was coming. 

5. One day, it was sunny. 

6.The magpie flew out early in the morning, searching everywhere and bringing back some withered grass to prepare a nest for the winter. 

7.The hanhao bird indulged in playing outside and came back to sleep when tired. 

8. The magpie said, “Stop sleeping, bird. 

9. It's still warm. Make a nest as soon as possible.

10.The hanhao bird didn't listen to the advice, still lying in the crevice of the cliff and saying to the magpie, “Silly magpie, don't be so noisy. It's sunny and a good time to sleep.” 

11. Winter was just around the corner, and a cold wind began blowing. 

12.The magpie was warm in its nest. 

13.The hanhao bird shivered in the crevice of the cliff and kept crying, “Oh, oh, the cold wind will kill me! I will make a nest tomorrow.”

14. The next morning, the wind stopped and the sun was warm, as if it was spring again. 

15.The magpie came to the crevice and admonished the bird: “Make a nest while the weather is fair. Now you are lazy, and you will be sad afterwards.” 

16.The hanhao bird didn't listen to the advice, stretched out and said, “Silly magpie, don't be so wordy. It's warm and I can muddle along.”

17. It was snowy that winter. 

18.The north wind roared like a lion, and the crevice of the cliff was as cold as an ice box. 

19.The hanhao bird repeated its wail: “Oh, oh, the cold wind will kill me! I will make a nest tomorrow.”

20. At daybreak when the sun came out, the magpie called for the hanhao bird from the branches. 

21. But, the hanhao bird had frozen to death during the night.

3寒号鸟和喜鹊面对面住着，成了邻居。

4.几阵秋风，树叶落尽，冬天快要到了。

5.有一天，天气晴朗。

6.喜鹊一早飞出去，东寻西找，衔回来一些枯草，就忙着做窝，准备过冬。

7.寒号鸟却只知道出去玩，累了就回来睡觉。

8.喜鹊说：“塞号鸟，别睡了。

9.天气暖和，赶快做窝。”

10.塞号鸟不听劝告，躺在崖缝里对喜鹊说：“傻喜鹊，不要吵，天气高照，正好睡觉。”

11.冬天说到就到，寒风呼呼地刮着。

12.喜鹊住在温暖的窝里。

13.塞号鸟在崖缝里冻得直打哆嗦，不停地叫着：“哆啰啰，哆啰啰，寒风冻死我，明天就做窝。”

14.第二天清早，风停了，太阳暖暖的，好像又是春天了。

15.喜鹊来到崖缝前劝寒号鸟：“趁天晴，快做窝，现在懒惰，将来难过。”

16.寒号鸟还是不听劝告，伸伸懒腰，答道：“傻喜鹊，别啰嗦，天气暖和，得过且过。”

17.寒冬腊月，大雪纷飞。

18.北风像狮子一样狂吼，崖缝里冷得像冰窖。

19.寒号鸟重复着哀号：“哆啰啰，哆啰啰，寒风冻死我，明天就做窝。”

20.天亮了，太阳出来了，喜鹊在枝头呼唤寒号鸟。

21.可是，寒号鸟已经在夜里冻死了。
