Lesson Six

The Thousand-People Cake

1.One day, a father said to his child: “Let's have some Thousand -people cake today.”

2. “Dad, what is Thousand-people cake?” the child asked curiously.

3. “It is a cake that can only be made by many people working together,”

4. the father answered.

5. The child thought: “If this cake requires a lot of people to make it, it must be very big, maybe even bigger than a table!”

6. But when the dad brought out a piece of the cake, it looked the same as the ones they usually ate.

7. Maybe it had a very special taste?

8. The child hurriedly tasted it and laughed: "It is the rice cake that we usually eat!

9. You've bought it for me before."

10. The father said, “That's right. It is the rice cake you usually eat.

11. But do you know how this cake is made?”

12. The child said: “By grinding the rice into flour and adding sugar to it.”

13. The father said, “Indeed. Rice is processed from the plants grown by farmers in the paddies. When planting rice paddies, farmers need seeds, farm tools, fertilizer, and water.”

14. The father continued, “The sugar is made from sugarcane juice and beet juice.

15. Sugarcane and beets need to be planted by people.

16. When making sugar, you need tools and fire.

17. And when the rice cakes are made, they have to be packaged, delivered, and sold, all of which requires a lot more labor.’

18. The dad picked up the cake and said: “Think about it, such an ordinary piece of cake. It is only after the hard work of many, many people that we are able to enjoy it now.”

19. The child listened to his father and thought about it carefully. Then the child said: "Dad, the cake should indeed be called 'Thousand-People Cake’!"

1.一天，爸爸对孩子说：“今天我们来吃千人糕吧。”

5.孩子想：这糕要很多很多人才能做成，一定特别大，也许比桌子还大吧?

6.爸爸端来一块糕，那糕看上去跟平时吃的糕没有什么两样。

8.孩子急忙尝了尝，笑了：“这就是平常吃过的米糕嘛!

9.您给我买过。”

10.爸爸说：“是的，就是平常吃的米糕。

11你知道这糕是怎么做成的吗?”

12.孩子说：“是把大米磨成粉做的，还加了糖。”

13.爸爸说：“是啊，大米是农民种的稻子加工出的。农民种稻子需要种子、农具、肥料、水….”

14.爸爸接着说：“糖呢，是用甘蔗汁、甜菜汁熬出来的。

15.甘蔗、甜菜也要有人种。

16.熬糖的时候，要有工具，还得有火….…

17.就算米糕做好了，还得要人包装、送货、销售，这些又需要很多人的劳动。”

18.爸爸拿起面前的糕，说：“你想想，一块平平常常的糕，经过很多很多人的劳动，才能摆在我们面前。

19.孩子听了爸爸的话，仔细想了想，说：“爸爸这糕的确应该叫‘千人糕'啊!”
