Lesson Eighteen

Fun Things about Living in Space

1.Do you know how astronauts live in space?

2.It's actually quite fun!

3.In a spacecraft, standing is as comfortable as lying down.

4.However, to sleep well, astronauts must get into sleeping bags attached to the walls.

5.Otherwise, they might drift somewhere else.

6.Moving around in a spacecraft also requires skills.

7.Unlike walking on the ground with legs and feet, in the cabin astronauts move mainly by using their arms.

8. In order to facilitate astronauts’ movement in the cabin, many special handrails are installed on the walls.

9.Normally, astronauts rely on these handrails or other equipment to balance their bodies.

10.In the spacecraft, astronauts cannot drink water with usual cups.

11.Because the water is in a weightless state, even if the cup is turned upside down, the water will not flow downward.

12.If the astronauts wants to drink water, they must use a drinking bag with a straw and squeeze the water directly into their mouths.

13.Bathing in space is not an easy task.

14.The water coming out of the shower head will always float in the air. In order to fix this problem, researchers conducted an experiment.

15.They designed a sealed bath tub and installed a straw suction tube underneath, which allowed the water coming out of the shower head to be sucked in one direction.

16.But after a shower, the astronauts had to spend a long time cleaning up the water on their bodies and in the tub, which was too troublesome.

17.So now astronauts usually clean their bodies with disposable wipes only, which is much simpler and efficient.

18.See? Isn't it fun to live in space?
