Lesson Nineteen

The Elephant's Ears

1.Elephants have a pair of big ears, which droop down like two fans.

2.One day, while an elephant was walking slowly on the road, he met a little rabbit.

3.The little rabbit said: "Hey, elephant, why are your ears drooping?”

4.The elephant said: “I was born like this.”

5.The little rabbit said: “Look, my ears are upright. There must be something wrong with yours.”

6.Later, the elephant met a little sheep.

7.The little sheep asked the same question: “Elephant, why are your ears drooping?”

8.The little deer, foal, and little mice all asked the elephant about his ears.

9.The elephant became uneasy. He said to himself: "They all said the same thing. Is there really something wrong with my ears?

10.I’ll have to make my ears stand upright.”

11.But how can ears be made to stand upright?

12.Every day, the elephant used two bamboo poles to hold up his ears while he slept standing up.

13.However, small bugs often flew in and danced in his ears. The noise gave him a headache and made him upset.

14.Finally, the elephant put his ears down.

15.That way the bugs couldn’t fly in.

16.If there were bugs, the elephant could drive them away by flapping his big ears.

17.The elephant said: “I'd better leave my ears drooping. I am proud of who I am.”

大象的耳朵

1.大象有一对大耳朵,像扇子似的耷拉着。

2.这一天,大象正在路上慢慢地散步,遇到了小兔子。

3.小兔子说:“咦,大象啊,你的耳朵怎么耷拉下夹了?

4.大象说:“我生来就是这样啊。”

5.小兔子说:“你看,我的耳朵是竖着的,你的耳朵一定是有病了。”

6.后来,大象又遇到了小羊。

7.小羊也说:“大象啊,你的耳朵怎么是耷拉着的呢?

8.小鹿、小马,还有小老鼠,见到了大象,都要说他的耳朵。

9. 大象也不安起来,他自言自语地说:“他们都这么说,是不是我的耳朵真的有毛病啦?

10.我得让我的耳朵竖起来。”

11.怎么才能让耳朵竖起来呢?

12.每天,大象站着睡觉的时候,就用两根竹竿,把耳朵撑起来。

13.可是,大象的耳朵孔里,经常有小虫子飞进去,还在他的耳朵孔里跳舞,吵得大象又头痛,又心烦。

14.最后,大象还是把他的耳朵放了下来。

15.这样,虫子飞不进去了。

16.有虫子来的话,大象只要把他的大耳朵一扇,就能把它们赶跑。

17.大象说:“我还是让耳朵耷拉着吧。人家是人家,我是我。”
